Cast vs. Flow Formed vs. Forged Wheels: What is the Difference?
Share
Alloy wheels have different prices because they are made differently. There are three main ways to make aluminum wheels: Cast, Flow Formed, and Forged.
1. Cast Wheels (Best Price)
Liquid aluminum is poured into a mold shape. This is the oldest and cheapest way to make wheels.
-
Pros: Low price and many design choices.
-
Cons: They are heavy and can break under huge impacts.
-
Best For: Daily driving and budget buyers.
2. Flow Formed Wheels (Great Value)
This starts as a cast wheel. Then, a machine spins and stretches the wheel under heat. This makes the aluminum much stronger.
-
Pros: They are 20% lighter than cast wheels but cost less than forged wheels.
-
Cons: Costs a bit more than simple casting.
-
Best For: Drivers who want better performance for less money.
3. Forged Wheels (Best Quality)
A solid block of aluminum is pressed with extreme force (10,000 tons). Then a machine cuts the final design.
-
Pros: They are the strongest and lightest wheels you can buy.
-
Cons: Very expensive.
-
Best For: Racing, sports cars, and luxury SUVs.
